it is unfortunate...

that I have to write this post.

Government interference is once again putting small businesses out of business thanks to the CPSIA regulations going into effect next month. There is no way many legitimate work-at-home moms will be able afford to pay the lead testing fees on every single carrier they make or diaper they sew, and/or the tags and registration cards that must come standard on items sold, and still make a profit. It is already putting my favorite diaper maker out of business. I foresee that many more will follow, as well as some of the most highly respected makers of mei tais, ring slings, pouches and wrap conversions. I'm also not quite sure how this will affect the importing of woven wraps from foreign weavers like Didymos, Storchenweige, Girasol and others.

It will probably not largely affect the big domestic manufacturers of baby carriers like Snugli and Bjorn because they mass-produce with the same materials. This is speculation, feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

It is very unfortunate that babywearing and cloth diapering mamas within the United States may be looking at a severe lack of other (often superior) options. More red tape and bureaucracy cannot be the best solution to the problem of imported materials containing lead. Sadly, it seems like its the only solution anyone in power can come up with.

My advice? Stock up on your favorite cloth diapers, baby carriers and other children's products now while they are still available.

Dang... Didn't even think of a carrier. I should start looking for a wrap now I guess.
