bareknuckle boxing match

I am a big fat scaredy cat when it comes to transitioning Moose to a big boy bed. Really. I dread the day that I put him in his crib, go downstairs to make myself a nice hot cup of tea, turn around and find him standing behind me with a smug, scrunchy-nose smile. I dread that day because I know that at that point the big move will be inevitable.

So what is the big deal about putting Moose in a bed? Well...if you can tell me how to keep a two-and-a-half year old boy in bed, I'm all ears. Especially one who despises bedtime, screaming "No ready bed! No ready bed!" no matter what time of night it is. I've tried switching around bedtimes to later to see if he would exhaust himself enough to retire without a fight. No luck.

Bedtime in our home is a frenzied, bareknuckle boxing match of wills. First, there is the initial screaming "No wanna sleep! No wanna sleep!" as I struggle to jammify Moose. Then comes the nightly marathon where the toys hide and mommy seeks to find just the right lovey to calm the chaos: "Sleep with truck! Sleep with spoon! Sleep with Pizza!" (little plastic food is a favorite at the moment) This would continue all night if I let it, so at some point I just have to cut him off, kiss him goodnight and leave. Some nights there are tears.

I feel sad for him, but my child has to sleep right? He couldn't possibly be in there playing, could he? Certainly not climbing on the side of the crib to see how high up he can get...right?

I can't help here, as we transitioned Goose to her toddler bed at 15months (she REFUSED to sleep in her crib - she'd only scream when in there) and while she doesn't often get out of her bed (she usually just fusses/cries when she needs us until we go get her) she CAN get down (and up!) if she needs to... which she did the other night when I had a HUGE MommyFAIL. which reminds me, I need to go blog that... GOOD BYE & GOOD LUCK!! *running to my blog*

Ha, B is ALWAYS sleeping/napping with various trains- Thomas, Hank, Percy... right now he's up there with Charlie. I am with you- we are waiting until he climbs out, there is no way I'm putting him in a regular bed until the last second!

The thing I found that has made the hugest (yea if that's a word) difference that finally took the fight out of bedtime is eliminating naps. Seriously, everyone here is so much happier without them. Lucy only gets cranky/tired during the day on very rare occasions but every night she practically begs to go to bed by 6 pm. And she used to give us so much problems sleep-wise.

I totally feel you on the issue about getting them to stay in bed. I wish I had a solution for you but since we co-sleep and don't do naps that's not really possible for Lucy to do at this point. I hope you all find a peaceful solution soon!

Transition to toddler bed went smooth for us.. but the part i decided to just "give" on ... was that EVERYTHING aly owned was in her bed with her. Im talking rocks, screwdrives, books (about 15) 7 dollies, a toy car, a princess crown, 4 blankets, a stuffed dog, a flash light... you name it... and every night the pile would get bigger and bigger. I would go in when i was sure she was asleep and move them otherwise the girl couldnt roll over. It made me CRAZY. i hate it. i KNOW she played for at least 45 minutes....... but if not.. the only way i could stop her, was to HIDE everything she owned. Then she screamed because she couldnt find it.

Im not certain me "giving" was my best parenting moment.... BUT.. i know she only has gotten outta bed 3 times in the month since transition... AND now.. she only has 1 car, 5 books, 4 dolls and a screw driver :)

LOL @ Heather!!! That is so cute.

M - I so feel you on this one. I have NO intention to transition Miss to a big girl bed until I absolutely have to. When we were in AZ she climbed out of a Pack N Play, which had me freaked out that she would start climbing out of her crib, but she still isn't doing that. Though she was trying this morning. . . Please oh please oh please, let her not figure it out anytime soon!!
