Even though I breastfed for over a year, babywear and cloth diaper I will never admit to being crunchy (I much prefer the term "lightly toasted"). When my oldest was little (25 years ago) and it was to hot to go outside, I would put a towel on the kitchen floor and put water in a couple of bowls. Iwould give her spoons and measuring cups and let her plays. When more kids came along they did this play in the bath tube.
