Each year our family usually participates in Operation Christmas Child hosted by The Samaritan's Purse. I love the idea of a charity where I know 100% my donations are going to the people I am supporting.
To participate, you fill a shoe-box sized box with gifts for children: toys, personal hygiene items, candies, pencils, paper, etc. These gift boxes are then delivered by missionaries to needy children around the world. Putting these boxes together makes a wonderful family project and are a great way to teach your children about the joy of giving to those in need. You can read more about donating a shoe-box gift at Operation Christmas Child's website. But if you want to participate, act quickly, as the deadline drop off of gift boxes is December 10th.

There are other ways you can give, too. You can donate money or volunteer for ministries with the Samaritan's Purse as well. You can also help immensely by praying for the ministries, missionaries, and needy children.
A charity that we do not currently donate to but that I would be very interested in looking in to supporting is Alzheimer's Association.

5 Lovin's:
We filled two of the shoeboxes- one boy, one girl. It was so heartbreaking to figure out what to buy for these children who may literally have nothing...
Oh this is a great organization! I love that its just a shoe box but you can fit so many things in there to bless some child's holiday.
I think closer to Christmas were going to go do some grocery shopping and take food to our local food bank. We really like taking Lucy with us when we do things like that (or like buying toys for the children of those killed at Fort Hood). The holidays are such a great time to introduce you child (even a young one) to the concept of giving back.
Our church really came together this year and made a couple hundred shoeboxes this year for children! I think it was at least 150. Doubled the amount we made last year! Awesome. It is a wonderful program.
LOVE THIS. My favorite charity is St. Jude. It breaks my heart to see children who are ill.
I'm happily following you from MBC.
I've got a ton of great giveaways on my blog, The Penny-Pinching Mama
We give every year. Usually we each pick a tag off a tree.. then we shop as a family for the gifts on the tag. We shop together, wrap and prepare together. Its always been neat watching my siblings connect to giving christmas to someone their age or feeling connected to someone they dont know.
When my grandpa passed last year.. my dads side of the family decided that we would find a family each year to give an entire christmas too. Tree, decorations, food, gifts, wrapping supplies.. everything. Its really my family to work together and to see how much we really do have and to share the blessings..
This year we are having troubles getting to the mall before the tag tree deadline. The shoe box gifts is a GREAT way to still give!!! I think thats what we may be doing!!
