Birth Story

Thursday 10/02/08 I decided I would go in the next day to get checked out for possible rupture of the amniotic sac.

At 8:30 am on Friday 10/03/08 (at 39 weeks 2 days gestation) my water broke. I had planned on going in that afternoon, but of course this hastened my plans. Since Hubs was at work, my mom came and picked me up to take me to Labor and Delivery. We checked in around 9:30 am.

I wasn't having any strong contractions, so the doctor and midwife (I got to have both!) suggested walking around. We did laps around the L&D unit in my very fashionable hospital gown for about an hour. Went back to the room and rested, ate lunch, and awaited. Still not very many contractions. So around 1:00 pm they had me walk again for another hour. Contractions picked up a bit, and at the end of the hour we headed back to the room. As soon as we got back the contractions hit hard. At 2:00 Hubs arrived at the hospital, just in time to see me through the worst of the pain. Around 3:00 they hooked me up to the epidural machine and gave me a little remote which controlled how much or little I wanted to be given.

Around 5:00 pm they checked me again and I was only 5 cm and still 90% effaced. My labor was moving slowly and they were worried about infection because I was running a fever, so they started me on Pitocin. At 9:00 I was 10 cm and 100% effaced - time to push!

I pushed for about a half hour when they made me stop and turn on my side. E was slightly sideways, so they wanted me to give him a chance to turn. at 10:00 pm I started pushing again. At 10:55 pm E was born! 8 lbs, 7 0z and 21 inches long.

A couple of the nurses had stayed past the end of their shifts just to see his birth. It was amazing holding him for the first time. He was so alert! He cried until they laid him on me, where he snuggled up and dozed off. It was a wonderful, albeit painful, experience!
